After introducing us to the fundamentals of the Delphi IDE from the previous session (Coding Boot Camp 2022), we are going to proceed with much deeper programming in Delphi. While Delphi is known for its low-code environment, this RAD Studio IDE is capable of creating high-performance applications on multiple platforms. In this session, we will be looking at programming constructs regarding variables and arithmetic functions and see what exactly this powerful programming language is capable of. Mrs. Denise Roode will walk us through the process of declaring variables and using them for mathematical purposes.

What are the benefits of declaring variables?

This session will introduce us to basic programming constructs that will require us to deal with a great number of codes to create a working application. Generally, an application is a set of instructions that an IDE software like Delphi executes. However, to make it work, these instructions must be laid out in the right order or proper sequence, otherwise, you might just end up with errors. This is where the programming construct comes into action. To understand it better, Denise will walk us through a detailed process of writing codes in sequential form.

Here, we will be looking at the basic input and output operations where we will attempt to build a simple interactive application in which users can input data and get an immediate response from the program in return. Aside from demonstrating the use of the Showmessage component where we will learn not just to display labels but also to merge two different text variables inputted by users (or create a default result where the two variables are separated by space), the session will also teach us how to use these variables for mathematical purposes.

How to use variables for mathematics?

In line with this, we will learn how to declare variables and how useful this method is especially if you are reusing the same variables in your program a lot. This process undeniably saves time and boosts the developer’s productivity. We will also learn how to convert strings to integers and vice versa to tell Delphi to perform mathematical operations instead of simply displaying text variables. Denise will also guide us through a detailed process of creating a fully functioning mock “fundraising application” where we will witness how it transforms from a simple mathematics program to a visually appealing application.
